How It Works

Gravel is one of the most versatile landscaping materials, used for driveways, walkways, drainage, and decorative ground cover. Because gravel is sold by both volume and weight, this calculator converts between cubic yards and tons so you can order accurately.

The Formula

Volume (cu ft) = Length x Width x Depth / 12
Cubic Yards = Volume / 27
Tons = Cubic Yards x 1.4

Variables

  • L — Length of the area in feet
  • W — Width of the area in feet
  • D — Desired depth in inches
  • 1.4 — Approximate weight of gravel in tons per cubic yard

Example

A 20 ft x 10 ft driveway section at 2 inches deep needs 33.3 cu ft = 1.23 cubic yards = 1.73 tons. At $50/ton that costs about $86.

Tips

  • Use 2 inches of gravel for walkways and 4-6 inches for driveways with heavy vehicle traffic.
  • Install landscape fabric underneath to prevent gravel from sinking into soil over time.
  • Order 5-10% extra to account for compaction and settling.
  • Angular (crushed) gravel compacts better for driveways; round gravel works better for decorative areas.
  • Gravel weighs roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard, but actual weight varies by type from 1.2 to 1.7 tons.
